“Put your phone down and have a conversation.” I don’t know about you, but I am guilty of holding my phone close to my heart as I move through my busy and technologically filled life. In her Tedtalk, Sherry Turkle challenges us to challenge the comfort that we have with our handheld technology and focus on our day-to-day personal conversations. Today, we are being taught as future teachers in all of our classes that it is important to include media into the daily lives of our students, but Turkle introduces an important point in her Tedtalk video. We as teachers must be cautious of the impact that technology has on students and we must teach to these precautions.
According to Turkel, we have become to comfortable with technology almost to the point that it becomes a way to crutch to the loneliness that we feel in this technologically inclined world. We must not only include technology into our classroom but we must teach the communication skills that are necessary for future success. Within the classroom, there must be a balancing act between the use of technology other life skills. Too much of anything isn’t really a good thing; that includes technology.
